The Castle Inn: A Medieval Mystery and the Road to Reopening
We were devastated to have to close The Castle Inn when we did, following the unexpected discovery of a deep, hidden medieval well beneath the building, which had collapsed. What began as a structural concern quickly became a much more complex issue, with significant subsidence and soil erosion making the building unsafe. Since March 2024, we have worked tirelessly alongside structural engineers and conservation specialists to stabilise and restore this historic Inn, ensuring its safety for generations to come. While the journey has been challenging, we are now making real progress and are hopeful that we will be able to reopen before Easter.

The road to recovery has been long and often overwhelming, revealing challenges we never could have anticipated, but we have never lost sight of the end goal: bringing The Castle Inn back to life. While progress has not always been as swift as we would have wished, we are now moving forward with real optimism. The building is finally stabilised, and we are turning our focus to the enormous task of preparing for reopening.
We know just how much this beloved Inn means to so many of you, and we want to thank you all for your unwavering support and patience during this incredibly difficult time. Your kind words, messages, and encouragement have meant the world to us and kept us going through the toughest of days.
Please continue to follow our social media and check our website for updates. As soon as we have a confirmed reopening date, you will be the first to know. We truly cannot wait for the day when we can throw open the doors, light the fire, and once again fill the Inn with the warmth, laughter, and community spirit that makes it so special.
The Castle Inn has stood for centuries, and thanks to you, it will continue to do so.
With heartfelt gratitude,
Suzanne, Ed & The Castle Inn Team
